Every coastal cruiser who’s kept a boat in hurricane-prone waters long enough has a story about the storm that almost got them — and usually a second story about the one that got a neighbor’s boat because they waited too long to act. If you cruise or keep a boat anywhere from the Gulf Coast to New England, hurricane prep isn’t an occasional exercise. It’s a seasonal discipline, and the boats that survive intact are almost never the ones scrambling three days before landfall.
This isn’t a generic “batten down the hatches” article. It’s a working checklist built around the decisions that actually matter: whether to haul or stay in the water, how your ground tackle and lines are rigged, what your marina’s storm plan actually obligates you to do, and what paperwork and documentation you need before the storm — not after, when your insurer is asking for it.
Start With a Decision, Not a Checklist
Before you touch a single line, you need to answer one question: is this boat safer hauled out, on a mooring, in a slip, or moved to a hurricane hole? That decision drives everything else, and it needs to be made when the storm is still 4-5 days out, not when it’s 36 hours away and the travel lift queue is six boats deep.
A few realities that shape this decision:
- Haul-out capacity is finite. Most boatyards along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts can only pull a limited number of boats per day, and that queue fills up fast once a storm enters the five-day cone. If you want to be hauled, call your yard the moment a system starts organizing in the tropics — not after NHC issues a hurricane watch for your area.
- Staying in a slip is rarely “doing nothing.” A boat left in its slip needs more lines, not fewer, along with fendering that accounts for storm surge, and someone willing to accept that the slip itself may not survive.
- Mooring fields are a mixed bag. A well-maintained mooring with a properly sized hurricane pennant can hold in serious wind, but plenty of mooring tackle in recreational fields is undersized for anything above a tropical storm. If you don’t know the specifics of your mooring’s ground tackle — chain size, swivel condition, pennant material — assume it’s inadequate until proven otherwise.
- Hurricane holes fill up too. If you’re planning to run the boat up a protected creek or river, know that everyone else with local knowledge has the same plan. Scout your hurricane hole in the off-season, not during an evacuation.
Whatever option you choose, make the call early and commit. Indecision is what leaves boats in the worst possible position — half-prepped, in the wrong location, with the owner out of time.
Ground Tackle: This Is Not the Time for Your Everyday Anchor
If you’re riding out a storm at anchor — which should really only be a last resort or a deliberate hurricane-hole strategy — your everyday working anchor is very likely undersized for the job. Manufacturers rate anchors for normal holding conditions, not sustained 60-100 knot gusts with a fetch behind them.
This is where a dedicated storm/hurricane anchor earns its keep. Storm anchors are sized well above your boat’s normal ground tackle specifically because catenary and shock-load assumptions go out the window in a hurricane — you want an anchor that can reset itself after a wind shift without dragging, because you won’t be aboard to help it. Chain, not rope, should make up the majority of your rode in a storm scenario — nylon rode’s stretch is an asset in normal conditions but a liability when it’s the only thing between your boat and a piling during 90-knot gusts, because chafe at the bow roller becomes the failure point. If you must use nylon, oversize the diameter well beyond your working rode and protect every point of contact with a heavy-duty dock line chafe guard.
Docking Lines: Double, Triple, and Then Check Chafe Points Again
If your boat is staying in a slip, your existing dock lines are not enough. Storm prep means:
- Doubling every line — bow, stern, and spring lines run in pairs, ideally attached to separate cleats or pilings so a single fitting failure doesn’t cascade.
- Sizing up. If your working dock lines are 1/2-inch, storm lines should be at least 5/8- or 3/4-inch depending on vessel size, run long enough to accommodate storm surge that can lift a dock several feet.
- Chafe protection everywhere line meets a fixed point — cleats, chocks, pilings. A dock line chafe guard at every contact point is cheap insurance against a line parting at 2 a.m. when nobody can get to the dock to re-rig it.
- Fendering for surge, not just for a normal tide swing. Standard boat fenders sized for daily docking often aren’t tall enough to stay effective once surge lifts the boat well above the dock — consider adding oversized fenders or fender boards specifically for storm conditions.
Walk the boat and physically test every line under tension before you leave. A line that looks secure at rest can still have three feet of unexpected slack once the boat surges against it.
Strip Everything Windage Creates
Wind load is the single biggest variable you have direct control over, and it scales dramatically with surface area. Every canvas enclosure, bimini, dodger, roller-furled headsail, and flag left up is effectively a sail generating load on your rigging, cleats, and hull fittings.
Before a storm:
- Remove all canvas — biminis, dodgers, connector panels, cockpit enclosures.
- Strip roller-furled headsails completely; don’t just roll them tighter. A partially furled jib is one of the most common causes of dismasting or rig failure in marina storm damage reports.
- Remove flags, wind instruments if practical, and anything loose on deck — cushions, kayaks, paddleboards, grills, solar panels not permanently mounted.
- Take down antennas that aren’t structurally rated for extreme wind, including add-on VHF antennas and radar arches with lightweight mounts.
- Empty the dinghy or remove it from davits — davit-mounted dinghies are a classic storm casualty and can also damage the transom on the way down.
If you’re storing the boat ashore under shrink wrap for an extended haul-out, a properly installed boat shrink wrap kit does double duty protecting the deck and canvas from UV and moisture while the boat waits out hurricane season on the hard — just make sure the frame underneath is actually rated for wind, not just rain runoff, if you’re wrapping ahead of storm season rather than after it.
Below Decks: Seacocks, Bilge Pumps, and Batteries
A boat that survives the wind and waves can still be lost to flooding from a failed thru-hull or a dead bilge pump battery. Before you leave:
- Close all seacocks except those needed for automatic bilge pump operation, and make sure the ones you’re leaving open are on components you trust completely.
- Verify bilge pump function and battery charge — this is not the time to discover a corroded float switch. A backup manual bilge pump gives you a fallback if the electric pump or the battery fails, though realistically no one should be aboard trying to pump during the storm itself; it matters more for post-storm assessment when you’re bailing out rainwater and minor intrusion.
- Disconnect shore power at the dock pedestal, not just at the boat, to eliminate a fire and electrocution risk if the dock floods or pedestals are damaged.
- Top off or disconnect batteries per your systems’ needs, and put battery maintainers like a marine battery maintainer on a stable circuit if you’re leaving the boat hauled out for weeks through the season rather than just riding out a single system.
- Add fuel stabilizer if the boat will sit unused afterward — post-storm fuel deliveries and dock power are often disrupted for days, and a stabilized, full tank avoids condensation and phase-separation problems down the line. A marine fuel stabilizer treatment before a haul-out is cheap compared to a fuel system cleanout later.
Documentation: Do This Before, Not After
Insurance claims after a major hurricane move slowly, and adjusters are covering hundreds of boats at once. The owners who get paid fastest and most fairly are the ones who documented condition before the storm.
- Photograph the boat from all angles, inside and out, including the engine room, electronics, canvas, and any pre-existing damage or wear, with a timestamp.
- Photograph your specific storm prep — lines, chafe gear, seacock positions, anchor set — so you have proof you followed a reasonable prep standard. Some policies specifically require “reasonable precautions” and will scrutinize claims where none were documented.
- Keep a copy of your policy, agent contact info, and a hurricane plan checklist in a waterproof bag or in cloud storage you can access from a phone with no boat access.
- Register your EPIRB and confirm it’s programmed with current contact information — while this matters most at sea, it’s part of the same “documentation and readiness” discipline, and if you evacuate on the boat ahead of a storm rather than leaving it moored, a functioning EPIRB and a charged handheld VHF radio belong on your go-bag list regardless.

The Communication Plan You Don’t Think You Need Until You Do
If you’re evacuating and leaving the boat, or if you’re running it to a hurricane hole, you need a communication plan independent of the boat itself:
- Confirm your marina or yard’s storm plan in writing — many require owners to remove the boat or complete specific prep by a stated deadline, and failing to comply can void certain protections or even get you asked to leave the marina during a mandatory evacuation window.
- Share your plan (haul-out location, hurricane-hole coordinates, or slip assignment) with a shore-based contact who isn’t evacuating the same area you are.
- If you’re staying with the boat until the last reasonable window, keep a fully charged handheld VHF radio and know your marina’s designated VHF channel for storm updates — cell networks are often the first thing to fail as storms make landfall. A Realistic Timeline
Trying to do all of this in the 24 hours before landfall is how corners get cut. A more realistic cadence:
At the start of hurricane season (June 1 in the Atlantic):
Confirm your haul-out arrangement or storm plan with your marina in writing. Inventory chafe gear, extra lines, and storm anchors so you’re not shopping for them during a run on hardware stores. Check your insurance policy’s named-storm deductible and any prep requirements it specifies.
When a system enters the 5-day cone:
Make your haul/stay decision. Call the yard if hauling. Begin photographing baseline condition. Fuel up and stabilize if the boat will sit afterward.
72–48 hours out:
Strip canvas, sails, and loose gear. Double and chafe-protect lines. Set storm ground tackle if applicable. Finish documentation photos.
48–24 hours out:
Final line and chafe checks. Disconnect shore power. Close non-essential seacocks. Confirm your evacuation route and communication plan if you’re not staying local.
After the storm:
Don’t rush back to the marina before local authorities clear access — downed lines, damaged docks, and fuel spills make post-storm marinas genuinely dangerous. When you do return, your pre-storm photos become the baseline for any damage assessment and insurance claim.
What Coastal Cruisers Consistently Get Wrong
A few patterns show up in post-storm damage reports year after year, and they’re almost all avoidable:
- Waiting for a watch or warning to act. By the time a hurricane watch is issued for your area, haul-out slots are gone and hardware stores are picked over. The 5-day cone is your real deadline.
- Under-sizing storm lines and chafe gear. Owners often storm-prep with the same line diameter they use daily, which is a mismatch for surge and gust loading.
- Leaving partially furled headsails. This single item causes a disproportionate share of rigging and mast failures in marinas.
- Assuming a mooring is “storm rated” without checking. Ask your mooring operator directly what the ground tackle is rated for — don’t assume.
- Skipping documentation. It costs twenty minutes and directly affects how fast and fairly a claim gets processed.
Bottom Line
Hurricane prep for a coastal cruiser isn’t a single afternoon task — it’s a seasonal mindset that starts with an early, decisive haul/stay call, backed by ground tackle and lines sized for the actual conditions rather than everyday cruising, and closed out with documentation that protects you if things go wrong anyway. None of it is complicated in isolation. What separates the boats that ride out a storm intact from the ones that don’t is usually just how early the owner started, not how much gear they had.
