Why Water Volume Deserves Real Planning

Most coastal cruisers spend hours obsessing over anchor scope, fuel burn, and battery capacity, then toss a case of bottled water under the settee and call provisioning done. Water is the one consumable you cannot improvise if you run short, and unlike a fuel range miscalculation, a water shortfall doesn’t announce itself until you’re already dehydrated, sunburned, and days from a marina. The good news is that the math isn’t complicated once you separate the categories: baseline hydration, cooking and hygiene, and emergency reserve. Get those three numbers right and you’ll rarely think about water again mid-trip.

The Baseline: How Much Water Per Person Per Day

The standard figure used by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and most sea survival references is one gallon per person per day for drinking and basic hydration. That’s a floor, not a comfortable cruising number — it’s the amount that keeps a healthy adult alive and functioning in temperate conditions with no unusual exertion.

For actual coastal cruising, where people are hauling lines, running the dinghy, standing watch in the sun, and generally working harder than they would at home, plan closer to a gallon and a half per person per day just for drinking. In Gulf Coast or mid-summer Chesapeake heat, some crews push toward two gallons per person on the hottest passage days. Kids typically need less by volume but dehydrate faster, so don’t assume you can shave much off a family trip’s total.

That gallon-and-a-half figure covers drinking only. Once you add:

  • Cooking — roughly a quart to a half-gallon per person per day depending on how much you’re boiling versus grilling
  • Basic hygiene — brushing teeth, quick rinses, dishwashing — another half-gallon to gallon per person if you’re conservative about it

Doing the Math for Your Trip Length

  • Add a 25–30% reserve for delays, weather holds, or a guest who showers twice a day = 80 gallons as your real target

That reserve percentage matters more than people think. Coastal cruising itineraries get pushed constantly — a squall line parks over your route, an inlet turns unfavorable on the tide, or you decide to wait out weather at anchor for two extra days. Water is the resource most likely to get squeezed by a schedule slip, because unlike fuel you can’t always top off at the next marina if you’re anchored out or the fuel dock line is an hour long.

Tank Capacity vs. Real-World Usable Water

Don’t confuse your builder-spec tank capacity with what you’ll actually have available underway. A few things eat into usable volume:

Tank sensor accuracy. Resistive water tank senders on production boats are notoriously optimistic in the last quarter of the tank. Many cruisers report their “1/4 full” reading is closer to empty. Treat the bottom 15–20% of your gauge as reserve you don’t plan around, not usable water.

Plumbing dead space. Water below the pickup tube in an oddly shaped tank never makes it to the tap. On boats with built-in tanks under settees or in bilge areas, this can be a genuinely significant volume.

Taste and freshness over time. Water sitting in tanks for a week or more, especially in warm bilprogram spaces, picks up a plastic or stale taste even if it’s technically safe. Many experienced cruisers keep tank water for washing, dishes, and cooking, and carry a separate supply of bottled or jugged water strictly for drinking — it’s a hedge against both taste and tank contamination.

Backup and Emergency Water Storage

Beyond your built-in tankage, carrying a portable reserve is cheap insurance. Collapsible water jugs or rigid jerry cans stored in a cockpit locker or lazarette give you a supply that’s independent of your plumbing system entirely — useful if you ever get a contaminated tank, a pump failure, or a hose split.

A reasonable target for emergency-only reserve, separate from your planned daily consumption, is one gallon per person for every day you might reasonably be delayed beyond your planned return — so a 3-day emergency buffer for a four-person crew is another 12 gallons, stored in sealed containers and rotated periodically so it doesn’t sit for a year untouched.

Watermakers are common on bluewater boats but genuinely optional for most coastal cruising, since you’re rarely more than a day or two from a marina, dock, or fuel stop with a hose. The math changes if you’re doing extended Bahamas hops off the Florida coast, running the more remote stretches of the ICW where facilities are sparse, or simply prefer not to plan a trip around tank refills. A small 12V watermaker can offset a lot of jerry-can hauling, but they add real complexity: pre-filters, pickling chemicals for storage, and membrane maintenance that punishes neglect. For a weekend or week-long coastal run, most cruisers are better served by simply carrying more tankage and portable jugs than by adding a watermaker to the maintenance list.

Storage Placement and Weight Distribution
