Why Fender Sizing Actually Matters
Most cruisers treat fenders as an afterthought — grab whatever’s cheap and round, tie it off, done. Then a wake rolls through the anchorage, your hull kisses the piling, and you find out the hard way that the fender you bought was sized for a boat two classes smaller than yours.
Fenders aren’t just cushions. They’re a load-bearing safety system that has to absorb real kinetic energy every time your boat moves against a dock, a piling, or another vessel. Undersized fenders compress fully and let the hull make contact anyway — which defeats the entire purpose. Oversized fenders aren’t dangerous, but they’re bulky, expensive, and often overkill for the loads involved. The right approach is matching fender diameter and length to your boat’s displacement and freeboard, then carrying enough of them to cover every contact point that matters.

Boat Fender Size Chart by Length Overall
Fender sizing is typically expressed as diameter x length, and manufacturers publish sizing tables based on LOA. Use this as your baseline, then adjust using the factors in the next section.
Under 20 feet: 3.5″ x 12″ to 4″ x 14″ fenders, or smaller round fenders in the 6″-8″ diameter range for center consoles and small runabouts.
20 to 25 feet: 5.5″ x 15″ to 6″ x 22″
25 to 30 feet: 6.5″ x 15″ to 7″ x 27″
30 to 35 feet: 8″ x 20″ to 8.5″ x 26″
35 to 40 feet: 9″ x 27″ to 10″ x 30″
40 to 45 feet: 10″ x 30″ to 12″ x 34″

Over 50 feet: Move into commercial-grade or heavy-displacement fenders, typically 14″ diameter and up, and talk to your marina about specific piling or wall configurations before you buy.
These ranges assume cylindrical fenders, which are the standard for coastal cruisers because they roll along a piling or dock edge as the boat moves, rather than staying pinned in one compressed spot. Round fenders still have a place — they’re common on smaller boats and work well at bow and stern positions where a cylinder would swing awkwardly — but for midship protection on anything over 25 feet, cylindrical is the default choice for a reason.
Adjusting for Displacement, Not Just Length
Length overall is the starting point, not the final answer. Two 34-foot boats can have wildly different displacement — a lightweight express cruiser versus a heavy full-keel trawler — and the trawler needs more fender than the chart above suggests based on length alone.
If your boat is on the heavy end for its length (full keel, heavy tankage, steel or heavy-gauge aluminum construction), size up one category from the chart. The extra mass means more energy to absorb on every contact, and a fender that’s technically “right” for your LOA can still bottom out under that kind of load.
Freeboard matters too. A boat with high freeboard relative to the dock or piling needs fenders long enough to actually stay in contact through tidal swings and wake action — this is especially relevant on the Chesapeake and along the ICW, where you’ll tie up at docks with a wide range of piling heights and where tidal range can be a foot or more even in protected water. A fender that’s perfectly positioned at low tide can ride up and expose bare hull at high tide if it’s too short.
How Many Fenders You Actually Need
This is where most boats are under-equipped. The common mistake is buying two or three fenders and calling it done because that’s what fit in the lazarette. Here’s a more realistic framework:
Minimum for routine dockside tie-up: 4 fenders. Two positioned at the widest point of the beam roughly amidships, one forward, one aft — enough to cover the boat rolling or surging against a straight wall or single-side dock.
Better for regular marina use: 6 fenders. This lets you fender both sides simultaneously without re-rigging, which matters at fuel docks, lock walls, or any tie-up where you don’t fully control which side faces the dock.
Rafting up or rough conditions: 8 or more, plus at least one oversized “fender ball” or extra-large round fender for corner protection where two hulls or a hull and a piling converge at an angle. Rafting multiplies contact points fast — every boat added to a raft-up needs its own set of properly placed fenders, not a share of yours.
Hurricane or storm prep: Substantially more than your everyday count, positioned to protect against surge and wind-driven contact from multiple directions, plus doubled-up fenders at high-load points. A set of boat fenders sized correctly for your boat class, bought in a matched set rather than piecemeal, is worth the up-front cost — mismatched fenders from different manufacturers often have inconsistent compression rates, which means the softest one in the lineup takes most of the load and wears out first.
Fender Placement Basics
Sizing is half the equation; placement is the other half. A correctly sized fender hung in the wrong spot still lets the hull touch.
Position fenders at the point of maximum beam first — that’s where contact is most likely on a straight approach. From there, add fenders fore and aft of that point based on your cleat locations, since fender height and horizontal position are both controlled by where you can actually tie them off.
Fender height should be set so the fender rides between the rub rail (or widest hull point) and the waterline, adjusted up or down depending on the dock height and expected tidal change. On finger piers and fixed docks with significant tidal range, plan to physically adjust fender height when you leave the boat for more than a tide cycle — a fender set perfectly at your departure tide can be uselessly high or low by the time you return.
Don’t overlook fender lines themselves. Fender Care and Replacement
Vinyl fenders degrade with UV exposure over time, and a fender that’s gone chalky or brittle isn’t going to compress and rebound the way it should when you actually need it to. Rinse fenders periodically to remove salt buildup, and store them out of direct sun when the boat is on the hard for any length of time.
Watch for slow leaks, too — an inflatable fender that’s lost even 20% of its air pressure has meaningfully reduced protection, even though it may look fine at a glance.
