It usually works fine until a front rolls through or a wake from a passing sportfisherman sets the boat surging against the pilings. Undersized line stretches past its working range, chafes through faster than it should, or in the worst case, parts entirely.

Sizing dock lines isn’t complicated, but it does require matching line diameter and length to your boat’s displacement, windage, and the way you actually use the dock — overnight slip, weekend raft-up, or a hurricane-season mooring. Stretch and shock loading. Nylon Twist, Braid, or Double Braid?

Almost all dock lines sold for recreational use are nylon, but the construction matters more than most owners realize.

Three-strand twisted nylon is the traditional choice and still a strong one. It stretches predictably, is easy to splice with basic tools, and tends to be the most affordable option per foot. Its downside is that it can hockle (kink) under repeated loading and looks more “workboat” than some owners want on a polished topside.

Double braid (braid-on-braid) costs more but resists abrasion better, runs more smoothly through chocks and windlass gypsies if you’re using it for anything dual-purpose, and holds up better cosmetically over time. For boats over about 35 feet that spend real money on gelcoat and topside maintenance, the extra cost is easy to justify.

Chafe Is the Real Enemy, Not Sun

UV degradation gets a lot of attention, and it’s real — nylon does lose strength with prolonged sun exposure — but on most cruising boats chafe kills dock lines faster than sunlight does. Any point where line runs through a chock, around a piling, or over a rub rail is a wear point, and it’s worse than it looks because chafe damage concentrates strength loss at a single spot rather than distributing it along the line’s length.

If you dock stern-to or Med-moor with any regularity, add a pair of shorter breast lines.
